从第一次世界大战到20世纪50年代，大多数重型轰炸机、大型攻击/打击飞机和远程海上巡逻飞机都配备了背部、中上部或顶部炮位。

在第二次世界大战期间，英联邦重型轰炸机机组的中上部炮手被视为机组的主要观察员，负责探测敌方战斗机的接近，同时防止与友军飞机相撞及意外的空中炸弹误击。
