Sea Knight 的研发始于1956年,最初被公司命名为 Vertol Model 107。该机型旨在取代第一代活塞发动机旋翼机(如 H-21 "Flying Banana"),并采用了新兴的涡轮轴发动机技术。1958年4月22日,V-107原型机完成首飞。1958年6月,美国陆军授予了基于V-107制造十架生产标准飞机(型号为YHC-1A)的合同,但该初始订单后被削减至三架YHC-1A。1961年,正在研究中型双涡轮货/兵员突击直升机需求的美国海军陆战队(USMC)选择了Boeing Vertol的Model 107M作为制造满足其需求的合适旋翼机的基础。该机型在非正式场合被称为"Phrog",正式名称为"Sea Knight",从越南战争期间服役到2014年退役前线期间,一直在美国海军陆战队的所有作战环境中使用。

美国海军陆战队使用Sea Knight提供全天候、昼夜突击运输,运送作战部队、补给和装备,直至2010年代被MV-22 Osprey取代。美国海军陆战队还使用该直升机进行战斗支援、搜索与救援(SAR)、伤员后送以及战术飞机与人员回收(TRAP)。在2000年代初MH-60S Knighthawk逐步取代该机型之前,Sea Knight也曾是美国海军的标准中型通用直升机。一些海外运营商也采购了该旋翼机。加拿大操作Sea Knight,型号为CH-113;该机型主要用于SAR任务,直至2004年。其他出口客户包括日本、瑞典和沙特阿拉伯。该旋翼机的商用版本是BV 107-II,通常简称为"Vertol"。Sea Knight是一款两栖直升机,能够直接降落在平静水面上并漂浮,但仅能维持数小时。
